One of the fun little magical secrets in Stardew Valley is Giant Crops. These are massive versions of regular crops that will drop more than the normal amount of produce for the number you planted. Not every crop can become giant though, making this a bit rare.
It's not hard to meet all the requirements for Giant Crops to grow, but it does require a bit of luck and patience. Here's everything you need to know about these cool crops.
Updated July 13, 2022 by Jacqueline Zalace: Since its release in 2016, Stardew Valley has continued to draw in gamers every day. Those who encounter Giant Crops for the first time may be left a bit perplexed, so we've updated this guide with more information on how to get these crops, as well as some tips for your farm's layout to increase your chances of getting Giant Crops.
What Are Giant Crops?
In Stardew Valley, there is a small chance that the following crops, when grown in a certain way, will combine into one gigantic crop.
- Cauliflower (Spring)
- Melons (Summer)
- Pumpkins (Fall)
When harvested, these three crops will drop 15 to 21 crops. Given that Giant Crops are made from nine regular-sized crops, that's quite the bonus.
How to Grow and Harvest Giant Crops
Growing Giant Crops is pretty easy, but you'll need a bit of luck (not the in-game Luck stat — that doesn't affect Giant Crops).
Here's how to do it:
- Choose one of the eligible crops (Cauliflower, Melons, or Pumpkins).
- Plant the seeds in a 3x3 grid.
- Water them as normal.
- Wait! Once the crops have grown, if you just leave them and continue to water them, there's a 1% chance each day afterward that they'll combine into a Giant Crop.
The crops combining together doesn't need to occur the day they finish growing. It can happen anytime after that, so long as you keep them watered.
This is important to know! You can leave your Cauliflower, Melons, and Pumpkins sitting all season long and they may suddenly become big if you keep watering them.
To harvest them, you'll need any type of axe. Whack the Giant Crop three times, and it'll break open, granting you 15 to 21 of whatever crop it is!
Giant Crop Growing Information
Here are a few things to keep in mind while growing Giant Crops.
- Giant Crops will not grow in the Greenhouse or in Garden Pots, nor will they grow on the Island Farm.
- Giant Crops do not die at the end of the season (even in Winter). They'll just sit there forever until you clear them.
- Fertilizer that improves quality does not increase your chances of growing Giant Crops.
- However, Speed-Gro will help you get them since it'll give you more days in the season for the crops to combine together.

Lastly, let's go over how to efficiently set up your farm so Giant Crops can grow.
If you don't want to water your crops yourself, we recommend using Iridium Sprinklers, which are the largest sprinkler size.
A Giant Crop takes up a 3x3 area, however, the Iridium Sprinkler has a 5x5 area, with the middle tile taken up by the sprinkler itself. This means that you will need an additional sprinkler to water the crops that you want to become giant. This can be done by hand, or with another sprinkler.
If you don't mind watering crops by hand, then try setting up just a 3x3 area with nine seeds of your Giant Crop of choice. This will keep the crop contained and you can control exactly where it will grow, as opposed to if you had a giant field of the crop.
Overall, the most important thing is patience! Many players may not realize that once the crops are fully grown, they will still have the chance to become a giant crop. If you have an area with grown Cauliflower, Melon, or Pumpkin, leave them there, make sure they get watered, and you may have Giant Crops before the end of the season.
